The Bench approaches SCW’s theme of 'sustainability' through sharing a series of events which look at the body, community, traditions and the environment.

By exploring the origins of making through material, mindfulness and tradition, we look at how we value craftspeople and their stories and how to create meaningful roots and connections.

Our events delve into culture and community, examining both the maker and consumer with the focus on the appreciation of our ancestors and environment.

Our events during Sydney Craft Week connect artisans to a global movement that supports and appreciates the sacred value of story-telling.

Discarded Delights, Urban Talismans

Sydney Craft Week 9 – 18 October, 2020

Discarded Delights, Urban Talismans at The Bench Sydney focuses on themes making for change and toward a more sustainable future. We bring four contemporary change makers together to deliver two workshops, a conversation, and an exhibition at Joynton Avenue Creative Centre during Sydney Craft Week.

Contemporary jewellers Lauren Simeoni and Melinda Young will facilitate a participatory making project which asks you to look between the cracks; to think about your community and the natural environment. What hopes and dreams are sprouting inside you for a more sustainable future? You are invited to write a message of hope and wrap it into a wearable talisman. Make one to share with your community and another for yourself on Mental Health Day.
Saturday October 10. 10am - 2pm
A kitchen load of recycled materials are all the ingredients you will need for Pennie Jagiello’s My Kitchen Jewels workshop . Discover how to utilise everyday materials with a focus on plastics that surround us, while employing a variety of creative multidisciplinary techniques to create a unique and wearable piece of art. ONLINE VIA ZOOM.

Saturday 10 October & Sunday October 11. 11am - 2pm
