ABOUT THE COURSE

Prerequisite

You must complete Learn to Make Jewellery Stage One - An Introduction or equivalent. This workshop is suitable for:

  • Makers with foundational jewellery‑making experience

  • Intermediate jewellers wanting to refine technique and expand their soldering skills

  • Anyone looking to deepen their understanding of torch soldering techniques

  • Students who enjoy process‑driven learning and hands‑on experimentation

Course Objectives

This intensive jewellery soldering workshop focuses on building strong technique through repeated practice and guided experimentation. You’ll work through a variety of soldering methods while developing a deeper understanding of flame control, solder flow, and fast, effective problem‑solving at the bench.

Using the Married Metal technique, you’ll complete at least one technical project—a mixed‑metal hollow‑form pendant or brooch—while also creating a series of reference samples that demonstrate different join types and construction approaches. As your skills progress, you’ll practise making hollow forms, complete multiple joins on a single piece, and learn to use just the right amount of solder to minimise clean‑up. Additional wearable pieces may be explored when time allows.

You will be guided through the following techniques:

Soldering - Recognise and apply a variety of soldering methods, selecting the most appropriate technique for each join.

Prepare solder - Correctly and efficiently for a range of jewellery applications.

Methods – Identify the different grades of solder and understand when to use each one.

Different techniques - Soldering pieces with multiple solder joints, complex joins and mixed metals including hollow forms.

The science behind the technique - Preparing metals, flux and solder types for soldering. Flame and heat use.

Complete multiple joins - On a single piece while maintaining precision and heat control.

Soldering multiple components - Build a series of reference samples demonstrating a range of join types and soldering techniques.

Advanced soldering – Construct hollow forms with confidence and structural accuracy.

Finishing - Use an optimal amount of solder to minimise clean‑up and finishing time.

Confidence - Solder with greater confidence, accuracy, and technical understanding.

Troubleshooting - Solving common soldering problems.
